Filiz Hyusmenova
Biography
Filiz Hakaeva Hyusmenova was born on June 10, 1966 in the Northeast city of Silistra.
Hyusmenova has a MA in French and Russian from Veliko Turnovo University in Northern Bulgaria.
In 1990, Hyusmenova became an Assistant Professor of French at the Education Department of the University of Ruse.
In 1997, she became a foreign languages expert at the Regional Inspectorate of the Ministry of Education and Science, Silistra
After the 1999 Local Elections, Hyusmenova was appointed a Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Silistra.
In 2001, she was appointed a Deputy Governor of the District of Silistra.
In 2003-2005, she was a Minister without Portfolio in the coalition government of former Tsar Saxe-Coburg's NMSS (NMSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
In the 2005 Parliamentary Elections, Hyusmenova was elected a Member of Parliament on the DPS ticket.
In 2006, she became a Member of the Central Executive Bureau of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
In 2007, Hyusmenova was elected a Member of the European Parliament; she was the No. 1 candidate on the DPS ticket.
In the European Parliament, she is a member of the group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
In the EP, Filiz Hyusmenova is a vice-chair of the Committee on Regional Development, a substitute on the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee, and also served on the Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union (including Libya).
Hyusmenova is married and has one child. In addition to Bulgarian, she speaks Turkish (mother tongue), French, and Russian.
