Turkey will construct an airport on an artificial island in the Black Sea, near the cities of Ordu and Giresun, the country's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim has announced.

A total of 20 million tons of soil and 9 million tons of rock will be poured into the sea to facilitate the creation of the artificial island. The future airport will have a 3 km-long runway and will cost USD 150 M, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency says.

The airport is expected to be functional in 2014 and is supposed to service 2.5 million passengers each year.

Turkey's Black Sea region is vastly populated, but has only one airport, located near the city of Trabzon.
