An NGO and users in Facebook groups have expresses their outrage at the ways the police and some Bulgarian media have reacted to the gruesome murder of a young Bulgarian woman.
The body of 28-year-old Bulgarian Yana Krasteva was discovered Sunday in the capital Sofia's Borisova Gradina park. Forensic experts have come to the conclusion that the young woman was raped, brutally beaten and strangled.
Several media reported that the woman was a "hobo" and an "alcoholic", which was denied by her friends and acquaintances on Facebook. It turned out that Krasteva worked in a mall.
The police have been criticized for the lack of information during the first two days after the body was found and the lack of any comments on behalf of high officials, including Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
The Association of European Journalists-Bulgaria has come up with a declaration condemning the way some Bulgarian media reported on the brutal murder. Several media sources have tried to downplay the severity of the crime, according to the NGO.
"The press service of the Ministry of Interior is trying to hide this crime from the Bulgarian society, probably in order not to cast a gloom over the information about the police's successes in the fight against organized crime," the declaration says.
Facebook users, some of whom were friends with the 28-year-old woman whose body was discovered last Sunday, have come up with an initiative for a peaceful gathering at the place of the murder next Monday. A petition has been launched for a better lighting of the Borisova Gradina park, which is very dark and could be dangerous at night.
