Romania has decided to raise unilaterally the dues for ferryboats connecting it with Bulgaria across the Danube.

The news was announced by representatives of Bulgarian transport companies, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio.

According to them, the Romanian side is raising the ferryboat dues for every landing at the Romanian coast from EUR 54 to over EUR 400. The measures refers to the ferryboats between Bulgaria's Vidin and Romania's Calafat, and Bulgaria's Oryahovo and Romania's Beket.

As the Bulgarian ferryboat firms carry out some 10-15 landings on the Romanian side of the Danube per day, the increased dues will affect them substantially.

Their representatives have stated that the unilateral decision of Romania to raise the dues was in conflict with the agreement between the Romanian and Bulgarian governments that has set a uniform landing fee for the Vidin-Calafat and Oryahovo-Beket lines.

The BNR announced that talks between the Bulgarian transport firms and the Romanian port authorities are expected to take place on July 14 or July 15. The Bulgarian ferryboat operators say they will be forced to raise their prices accordingly if no solution is found.

They also said they were ready to file complaints against Romania with the respective EU institutions.
