Identity Theft on the Rise in Bulgaria

Business | August 29, 2007, Wednesday // 00:00

Bank fraud aided by identity theft is on the rise in Bulgaria, local consumer loans firm Jet Finance International said on Wednesday.

Altering a stolen identity card, leaving the personal data intact and changing only the picture, costs only BGN 100, company chief executive Ivan Hristanov told reporters.

The criminals then try to borrow as much as possible before destroying the cards, and are sometimes inadvertently aided by the banks themselves, he added.

Many bank branches prefer to just reject a loan application if they have any suspicions regarding the identity of the client, but do not call the police, fearing negative publicity, Hristanov claims.
