Luther Vandross has had an amazing R&B career with 25 million records sold and eight Grammy Awards.

Vandross was born in New York City. His singing career started in 1970 when he performed back-up vocals for artists such as David Bowie, Roberta Flack, Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand.

Vandross made a breakthrough as a guest singer with the group Change.

His career rocketed in the 1980s with all of his albums becoming an instant classic.

Luther Vandross has also produces a number of albums for Aretha Franklin, and became the main career inspiration for modern artists like Boyz II Men, Usher, Alicia Keys and Beyonce.

Vandross died at the age of 54 on July 1, 2005 at 1:47pm EDT, at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. He was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his death, and they said his passing was a peaceful one.
