Bulgaria has the unique potential to develop ornithology tourism offering the opportunity to observe more than 200 bird species, including 20 of the rarest birds globally that can be seen in Bulgaria alone.

The Balkan country offers dwelling to a third of the total number of bird species living in Europe, which will be one of the accents in the national presentation at the coming Berlin's Tourism Fair, Dr Peter Yankov from the Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds (BSPB) said Wednesday.

The society has been offering tourists ornithology packages in Bulgaria for 15 years.

He said the summer season on the Black Sea coast could be extended through tourist tours for observation and research of birds, as this is the season of migration and Bulgaria stands on the routes of bird migration.

Species of specific interest in Bulgaria are the Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), in the Sreburna Lake, the Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus), the Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis) and the vanishing Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) that can be seen nowadays in some Scandinavian countries alone.

The coastal areas of Shabla and Durankulak are haunted also by the Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga) and the Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola), Dr Yanev said.
