UDF Wants Bulgaria's Deputy PM Out after Nixing Tobacco Deal

Business | April 1, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

The right-wing opposition United Democratic Forces demanded that Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, Deputy PM and Economy Minister Nikolay Vassilev and leader of the ruling coalition partner the Movement for Rights and Freedoms Ahmed Dogan take the political responsibility over the failure of Bulgaria's Tobacco deal.

It is high time that Deputy PM Nikolay Vassilev submitted his resignation, otherwise the responsibility must be born by Saxe-Coburg and Ahmed Dogan, Plamen Oresharski, deputy chairman of the Union of Democratic Forces, said after a meeting of UDF National Executive Council April 1.

UDF parliamentary group is to consider certain parliamentary procedures, but will refrain from radical measures.

The rightist opposition demanded that the privatisation procedure for Bulgartabac be terminated immediately.

Earlier in the day the Cabinet backed the decision of the parliamentary groups of the ruling coalition that the privatisation procedure for Bulgaria's tobacco monopoly be terminated and Bulgartabac is not sold under the existing circumstances.
