Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has welcomed the outcome of the tender to carry out exploration for five years at Khan Asparuh field in the country's Black Sea.

"I am glad to hear that the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism has carried out an extremely transparent tender," Borisov has told reporters.

It was French company Total SA that won the tender on Thursday.

"It is a fact that the best companies took part. This means a real diversification. Much more real than the gas interconnector with Turkey," the Bulgarian Prime Minister commented.

He pointed out that the move will help Bulgaria decrease gas prices and achieve more favorable conditions during negotiations for the purchase of gas with Russia's Gazprom.

The French company won the tender to carry out exploration for five years at Khan Asparuh field over British-based Melrose Resources Plc.

Some 42-84 billion cubic meters of natural gas were recently proved in Romanian waters near the Khan Asparuh block.

The Khan Asparuh block spans 15 000 square kilometers in Bulgaria's Black Sea waters. According to preliminary geologic studies, it may contain 500 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
