Local authorities in Rome have announced that they have started demolishing illegal Roma camps in and around the city.

Around 210 illegal camps housing some 2500 Roma are estimated to be present in the Italian capital.

Residents live in destitution, without access to running water and electricity.

A total of 7100 Roma live in Rome, largely coming from Romania and the former Yugoslavia.

Rome authorities are planning to destroy all 210 illegal camps within the coming months, planning 4-5 demolitions per week.

Authorities have promised a flexible approach to residents, offering them resettlement in appropriate housing, opportunities for integration, or repatriation.

Recently Italy has spoken in favor of controversial measures taken up by the French government against Roma residing in France who are either illegally present or have committed crimes.
