Legal charges against mobsters arrested in highly publicized police operations “Octopus” and “The Impudent” are imminent, announced Bulgarian interior minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov Monday.

The charges are to be filed in court within 4-5 weeks, said Tsvetanov, speaking in front of Bulgarian Nova TV.

Since its coming to power in July 2009, the center-right GERB government, which has vouched to vanquish organized crime, has staged a number of highly publicized police actions with characteristic codenames.

25 people were detained by the police on December 18, 2009, in an operation codenamed "The Impudent," cracking down on the gang that terrorized Bulgaria by kidnapping important businessmen and/or their relatives.

A total of 14 suspects, including notorious former top secret agent Aleksei Petrov, were arrested by the Bulgarian police in an operation codenamed “Octopus”, seen as a follow-up of the “Impudentspecial operation .

The special operations were conducted jointly by the Interior Ministry, the State National Security Agency (DANS) and the Prosecutor’s Office.

Speaking Monday Tsvetanov stressed the prime importance of combating conventional crime, apart from targeting high-profile key members of the criminal world.
