Three members an organized crime group including its leader were detained this Friday in Bulgarian capital Sofia, stated Bulgarian interior minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

A special police operation, codenamed “The Plastics”, is being carried out against a gang that specializes in withdrawing cash from ATMs using plastic slabs. 100 plastic slabs and BGN 60 000 cash have been found.

Raids and searches within the operation are continuing, said Tsvetanov.

The center-right GERB government that has been ruling Bulgaria after the July 2009 election has vowed a merciless crackdown on organized crime and has staged multiple highly publicized police operations with picturesque codenames.
