Bulgaria’s ruling center-right GERB party has started to collect MP signatures for the impeachment of Socialist President, Georgi Parvanov.
The motives for the demand for impeachment are expected to be announced later on Friday.
The move comes on the heels of Parvanov’s press conference, dedicated to critics of the cabinet’s anti-crisis efforts and to the scandal surrounding his publishing of the transcript of a conversation with Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, without the latter’s knowledge.
The conflict between Djankov and Parvanov flared up after the appearance of the Finance Minister in the talk show of the TV channel Nova Televizia, where he was asked to confirm claims that the President is a “young billionaire” and has “dozens of luxury properties in the United States, Europe and Dubai.” Djankov immediately denied saying such things, but when the host reiterated the question: “Is the President a young billionaire?” the Minister replied: “He is definitely not young.” The very next day, Parvanov made an official call for Djankov’s resignation.
In an instant reply, the Minister denied any wrongdoing, but nevertheless and on the insistence of PM Borisov, who arranged a meeting between him and the President, agreed to try to iron out the “misunderstanding.”
On March 5, following the talks between the two, Socialist President Parvanov published the transcript on his website triggering a wave of comments and criticism and five days later GERB announced they are beginning the impeachment procedure.
Initially, a positive outcome for them seemed highly unlikely because in order to initiate the procedure 160 Members of the Parliament signatures are needed. At the time GERB with the support of the right-wing Blue Coalition and the far-right nationalist Ataka party had 154.
In a surprise move, however, the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party announced a day later they are set to support the President impeachment. With them GERB will collect the needed signatures. Some independent MPs are also said to vote yes on the impeachment.
