Bulgaria's conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party is set to support the President impeachment process launched by the ruling GERB party Wednesday over the transcript scandal.
RZS leader, Yane Yanev, announced Thursday that his party is ready to participate in consultations and provide the necessary votes to start the impeachment procedure. This comes 4 days after RZS had originally said that it saw no legal argument to initiate the removal of President Parvanov from his office.
"This is not an act directed against the head of state but instead is a political mechanism for discussion on key constitutional issues in the relationship between institutions,” Yanev said.
For the impeachment process against Parvanov to be started GERB will need the support of 160 MPs, currently it has the backing of 154 but with the RZS MPs it may reach the required number.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov reacted to the fall of the Zhelyazkov government during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, following the mass protests across the country.
