Bulgaria's anti-trust watchdog announced it had launched a probe into nine pharmaceutical companies in the country over allegations of a cartel.
The Commission for Protection of Competition said in a statement that the cartel manipulated procedures for winning tenders for supplies of expensive medicines in breach of the rules on the market.
The companies to be investigated are Sopharma Trading, Higia, Targovska lida, Alta Pharmaceuticles, Bulrei & Co, Elpharma, Roche Bulgaria, Johnson & Johnson, Alkaloid.
The move has been prompted by a tip-off from the health minister, concerning the equal price offers of companies, vying to win a tender for supply of expensive medicines.
The news comes just a week after Prime Minister Boyko Borisov threatened to crack down on mafia like structures in the pharmaceutical industry, which has allegedly incurred millions of levas of loss to the state.
