Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) announced Thursday that BGN 24 M will be distributed among magistrates as Christmas bonuses.
The proposal came from Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, and his Deputy, Valeri Parvanov.
The Chair of the VSS Budget committee, the infamous Ivan Kolev, who in the summer became the whistle blower in the so-called “Krasio” scandal, explained the money came from open job positions within the judicial system and the salaries slated for them.
By October 31, the system had 508 magistrate openings (from total of 4 700 magistrates) and 452 administrative positions (from a total of 8 900).
The courts and prosecutor offices' heads will decide on their own how to distribute the money, saved by their office and the amount of each single bonus.
The maximum amount, according to the VSS rules, equals 4 monthly salaries.
The Justice Minister has the authority to determine the bonuses of the State law enforcement officers and the business registration judges. Supreme Court Chairs, the Chief Prosecutor, the Director of the National Investigative Services, and VSS Chief Secretary are also entitled to receive bonuses.
