Bulgaria's nationalist party Ataka proposed Wednesday establishing a parliamentary commission that is to investigate alleged vote-buying at the recent local elections in the country.

The right-wing United Democratic Forces (UDF) party backed the idea while leftist Coalition for Bulgaria were against the proposition discussed at today's session of the parliament.

Furious arguments caused UDF's declaration project stigmatizing the scandalous statement of ethnic Turkish party leader Ahmed Dogan, who labeled vote-buying "a European democratic practice" after the end of the mayoral elections.

"Democracy does not mean vote-buying", said Ekaterina Mihailova, an MP from Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB).

"Dogan's words compromise the Bulgarian Parliament as an institution", Mihailova added.

The right-wingers misunderstood "the words of a philosopher", according to MP Lyutvi Mestan, a representative of Dogan's Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).

"This is just a remark and does not express approval", Mestan added.

Left wingers and centrist NDSV party supported the position of their coalition partner MRF and were against condemnation of Dogan's words.

Reportedly, the statement triggered sharp reactions in the European Union and Bavarian European Policy Minister Markus Soeder called on Brussels to cut funds for the newly acceded country if alleged vote-buying turns out true.

Scandals of alleged vote buying shook Bulgaria during the mayoral elections that ended on November 4.
