Bulgarian Rightist Leader Seeks Electoral Reform

The leader of Bulgaria's Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) Plamen Yurukov called for a radical reform of Bulgaria's electoral laws to stamp out voting fraud and bring Bulgarians back to voting booths.

Bulgaria's legislature should start working on a new electoral code as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the next parliamentary elections in 2009, Yurukov told reporters after mayoral run-off polls ended on Sunday.

Bulgarian MPs have already amended the law twice this year, before the MEP vote in May and then several months later for the local elections, but the local vote has been widely described as the most fraud-ridden in Bulgaria's post-Communist history.

Additionally, the complicated ballots have been exposed as too cumbersome for the local elections and too easy to manipulate, said Yurukov.

"The law is deficient and the ruling coalition has once again shown that they couldn't deal with the teachers' strike, but also that they can't even hold proper elections," he added.

For UDF, the most important conclusion drawn from the polls is the need for the unification of rightist parties.

"We've been give a credit of trust and we have to show ourselves worthy of it," he said.
