Bulgarian Ex-King's Party Proposes Obligatory Civil Voting

Politics | July 3, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

Bulgaria's ex-king's party proposed on Tuesday an obligatory voting for all Bulgarians at the upcoming local elections in autumn.

The proposal was met with uproar from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) members. The secretary of BSP even called the idea "exotic".

Ex-king's party National Movement for Stability and Progress also proposed the local authorities to impose a fine to everybody who abstained from voting. The idea is to impose a fine to the people who did not voted after they give thorough explanations for their actions.

At the same time BSP members disapproved the idea, claiming that it is too late to introduce obligatory voting for the local elections, which are scheduled for September. The socialists believe there are other mechanisms that will increase the voting activity.
