More than 30 people lost their lives after the sizzling hot weather that recently hit Bulgaria swept the whole Balkan Peninsula.

A total of 22 people died in Romania since Tuesday mainly after heart attacks caused by the record high temperatures.

Two youngsters, aged 14 and 21, drowned in pools in Romania's southern town of Kalarash while trying to get cool in the summer heat.

Medics in Serbia announced that at least seven people died in the last few days because of the sweltering heat.

The mercury zoomed up to 40В° C in Macedonia as well and the authorities reported on numerous emergency calls by elderly people, who were suffering from heart and respiratory diseases.

Another three people died in Albania during the hot summer days.
