An Italian leftist politician has urged the introduction of a visa regime for Bulgarians and Romanians over the next two years in a bid to tighten the flux of immigrants.
Filippo Penati, president of the province of Milan, urged that the Italian government holds negotiations with Bulgaria and Romania on the possibility of imposing a moratorium on the entry of their citizens.
"Unless we stop this flux, it will become uncontrollable. While we are hardly managing to handle 100 immigrants, another 1000 have already arrived. It is like trying to ladle out a sea with a teaspoon," Penati said, as cited by the Bulgarian national radio.
Penati claims that crimes committed by non-Italians have inflicted a wound on the northern part of Italy and the province of Milan in particular.
Bulgarian citizens are allowed to travel in EU member states only with their ID cards and in line with the Schengen agreement as of 2007, when the country joined the European block.
