Qadaffi Tests Bulgaria's Reaction on HIV Case - Lawyer

Politics | January 28, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The different claims of Muammar Qadaffi and his son on the case of the death-sentenced five Bulgarian medics are aimed at gathering maximum information through observing Bulgaria's public opinion, medics' lawyer said on Sunday.

Defence lawyer Vladimir Sheytanov made the statement in an interview for Darik Radio, after Saif Al Islam Al Quaddafi said on Saturday the five Bulgarian medics will not be executed.

He believes Libya is trying to plan its political moves and tactics on the basis of the gathered information of how Bulgarian people, governors and the media react on the issue.

Such a statement sounds frivolous as it is just the opposite of what Qadaffi father said on January 1 this year, Sheytanov added. On that date Muammar Qadaffi announced Libya will execute the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor if they are sentenced to death.

The case gets more and more complicated as Qadaffi and his son make absoluterly opposite statements on the execution of the medics.

The women and a Palestinian doctor have been held in Libya for the past eight years. Their death sentence was confirmed by aLibyan court on December 19, 2006.

They six are accused of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the HIV virus in a hospital in Benghazi.

The European Union is currently campaigning for the release of the medics.
