Nationalists Victorious in Serbia's Poll

Politics | January 22, 2007, Monday // 00:00

The nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) has taken a clear lead in the country's elections after gaining more than 28% of the votes, early results suggest.

The pro-EU Democratic Party (DS) and Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) ranked second and third, gaining 22% and 17% respectively.

Serbia's electoral commission set the turnout at about 62% of the 6.6 million eligible voters.

Experts from the election-monitoring group said that the winner in the elections will find it hard to form a governing coalition.

According to EUexpands the ultra nationalist could form an alliance with Vojislav Kostunica that hasn't ruled out this possibility.

"That is a scenario feared by the EU, which would then get a much tougher job in approaching Serbia," the article commented.

The moderate forces have had, on the contrary, pledged to re-open the frozen talks with Brussels and cooperate with the International Criminal Court for Former Yugoslavia as fugitive Ratko Mladic is still at large.

The province of Kosovo is the apple of discord of the political debate in Serbia as Serbs want to keep the province part of the country.

Kosovo's future status is going to be also discussed during the meeting of EU foreign ministers Monday.
