Bulgaria and Serbia will share a railway station from Monday, which will operate as such for the both countries together.
Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev and Serbian Capital Investments Minister Velimir Ilic opened the joint frontier railway station, which is situated on the country's west border with Serbia.
The joint project became possible after the enforcement of an agreement on border control and procedures in railway traffic, as well as the rules on its application signed on Monday. The agreement, which dates from 2005, designates Dimitrovgrad as a joint border station where all procedures on acceptance and handing over of trains by the railway staff, as well as all border services of the two countries will take place.
Investments in the station amount more than EUR 5 M, Ilic announced. From the EUR 3,7 M were spent on signalisation and another EUR 1,5 M were spent on reconstruction of the infrastructure of the site. The European Investment Bank provided the funding on the project.
