The European Commission does not expect the closure of Kozloduy Units 3 and 4 at the end of 2006 to lead to energy crisis in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has been concerned about a potential energy crisis coming in 2007 due to the reduced energy output, but Brussels has decided to respond to these fears after it confirmed 1 January 2007 as accession date.
Three months ahead of Bulgaria's membership, the EC announced results from an independent research on this extremely controversial issue.
The results of the research show that Bulgaria exports electricity at the moment and the country will be left with excessive amounts of electric power even after the units' closure.
Bulgaria can rely on support in case any problems occur after the closure of Units 3 and 4, said Feran Taradelas, spokesman of EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
The closure of the two units has come after strong pressure from the European Union and was set as precondition for Bulgaria to join the bloc.
