The bird flu threat that hangs over Bulgaria is bigger than ever, veterinary officials from Bulgaria's Danube port Russe claim.
In the words of Russe Veterinary Service head doctor Simeon Yotovski the threat is really serious as the bird flu hotspots are very close to the Romanian border with Bulgaria.
Yotovski also said that there is no enough information for the spread of the disease, which came from a poultry factory in the Romanian town Brasov where "an entire flock infected with the virus was culled and the products were sold."
Bulgaria, which has a 600-kilometer long border with Romania to the north, mostly along the Danube River, has reported no cases of bird flu in domestic fowl so far.
Romania has detected 47 outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu since last week, and culled all domestic fowl in dozens of communities in an effort to contain the epidemic.
Bulgaria's bird flu crisis headquarters had an emergency meeting Thursday and agreed to beef up preventive measures such as a poultry imports ban and regular disinfections at border crossings, which have been in force since last year's first bird flu outbreaks in Turkey and Romania.
