Wife Killed by Husband in Cigarettes Scandal

A 54-year-old woman has been stabbed to death by her husband after an alleged brawl over the new hikes in cigarette prices.

The family lived in the village of Rozino, near the town of Plovdiv.

The woman begged her husband to quit smoking and stop buying cigarettes, but he would not agree with her.

As emotions ran high, the woman turned on her husband while he was having lunch in the bed. He grabbed the kitchen knife, lying nearby, and stabbed her.

An investigation into the case has been launched.

Cigarette packs of both Bulgaria-made and imported brands went pricier as from January 1 due to higher excise duty. Prices jumped up by about BGN 1 or EUR 0.5. Thus the most popular Victory packs now cost BGN 2.60 instead of the current BGN 1.60.
