Bulgaria "Summoned Graham Sankey to Court"

Politics | August 20, 2005, Saturday // 00:00

The Bulgarian court that jailed Briton Michael Shileds did try and summon Graham Sankey, the man who had confessed to the same crime, The Daily Mirror wrote Saturday.

It was the UK Home Office that refused to serve the subpoena on Sankey. They said they had not been given enough notice, the newspaper says.

Bulgarian court in Varna has found Michael Shields, 18, guilty of attempted murder in a bar fight, and jailed him for 15 years.

The court faced continuing criticism from UK press for reportedly ignoring Graham Sankey's confession to the same crime.

The Shields family also insist that Michael is innocent. His uncle Joey Graney told the Sofia News Agency that Shields was a very quiet and gentle person.

Last month, he was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for hitting a Bulgarian bartender with a paving slab. The victim suffered serious head damage.

Shields was spending the night at the Bulgarian resort of Golden Sands, after watching his favorite team Liverpool play in Turkey.

Appeal hearings are to take place.
