A Bulgarian businessman charged with links to the Saddam Hussein regime has been contributing to America's National Republican Senatorial Committee, a check by the Sofia News Agency showed Friday.

Ludmil Dionissiev has been paying sums varying between USD 200 and USD 2,000 over 1994-1996, according to contribution notices published online.

In those documents Dionissiev is described as Senior Vice President of Coral Oil & Gas, an oil and gas exploration and development company based in Houston, Texas.

The Sofia News Agency addressed via e-mail the National Republican Senatorial Committee with the request to throw more light on their relations with Dionissiev, and we are looking forward to the reply.

Meanwhile, the Houston court launched the hearing of the case against the Bulgarian indicted in a scheme to pay millions of dollars in kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's regime as part of the United Nations' scandal-ridden oil-for-food program.

An indictment unsealed in New York federal court says David B. Chalmers, of Texas, Ludmil Dionissiev, of Bulgaria, and John Irving, of Britain, paid the kickbacks to secure preferential treatment under the program for two oil companies owned by Chalmers.
