Karbala Hit by Violence

Politics | June 22, 2004, Tuesday // 00:00

Two weeks before the official handover of power to Iraqi government, coalition forces have seen an increased violence and attacks by local insurgents.

A convoy of patrolling Bulgarian troops was attacked on Monday with an improvised gun machine in the outskirts of Karbala, Defense Ministry announced.

No casualties or damages have been communicated.

Bulgarian troops stick to their mission-scheduled tasks, including repair works at the Civil Defense Corpus, which has recently revealed weapons deposits concealed in close proximity to Bulgarian Kilo base.

Defense officials have reiterated warnings of escalating tension and violence outbursts inside and outside the holy Shia city of Karbala. Ahead of June 30 power handover American troops were reportedly withdrawing from the city.
