Top Defence Resignation in Denmark

Politics | April 23, 2004, Friday // 00:00

Denmark's defence minister has submitted his resignation late on Friday. The move came as a result of increased criticism over government reports about alleged weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Days earlier, lawmakers approached Svend Aage Jensby whether Denmark's military intelligence agency had given accurate reports on Saddam Hussein's possession of WMDs. Despite Wednesday's news of a killed Dane in Iraq, Denmark said it was ready to expand its 510 troops deployed in Basra and nearby Qurnah, 250 miles southeast of Baghdad. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, announced the defence ministry helm would be taken over by 41-year-old lawmaker and former army officer Soeren Gade.
