Moqtada al-Sadr, the radical Shiite leader, has left the southern Iraqi town of Najaf and headed in an unknown direction.

Iran's agency Irna released the information, citing an unnamed ally of the radical leader.

American troops have been deployed in the town in apparent preparation for an assault on the forces of the Shiite cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, news agencies reported earlier.

US troops arrested Shiite Muslim radical leader Moqtada al Sadr's top aide earlier in the week. Sheikh Hazem al-Araji told reporters he had been arrested by members of the Coalition force.
