After ten hours of antigovernment protests in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, tensions continue to flare even further.
Direct clashes between riot police and demonstrators were reported around 9:30 pm as huge government reinforcements have arrived and violently pushed people with their shields and batons from the square in front of the Parliament.
The square has been cleaned at 9:45 pm and demonstrators are now standing on the east side, behind Tsar Liberator monument on the square. Some of the citizens have raised their hands in sign they are asking for non-violence.
However, groups of provocateurs are present as well, dressed in sweatshirts with hoods on their heads, attacking the police with bottles and stones, trying to provoke new violent clashes.
The public television BNT showed live footage of beatings by police, people lying on the ground and a group of young men holding onto a car parked on the perimeter of the square in order to resist the police shove.
Earlier in the evening, protesters managed to push down most of the railings in front of the Parliament building in an attempt to get as close as possible, while riot police squeezed them back.
Tuesday is the 152nd day of antigovernment protests in Bulgaria.
The public TV, BNT, also reported that some of the protesting students retreated to the occupied by them building of Sofia University upon being informed that groups of provocateurs have infiltrated the protest.
According to the BNT reporter, the protest has just calmed down when the huge riot police reinforcement suddenly arrived and started to violently push people away which resulted in cleaning the square.
Tensions are percisting in adjacent areas.
Twelve people have been arrested throughout the day.
