Excavations and constructions of the underground in Sofia's culturally rich center are expected to be ready for the August visit of EC President Jose Barroso, said Bulgarian Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov.

Tuesday Rashidov and colleague, Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova were on inspections at the site near Bulgaria's government buildings, where the expansion of the metro station takes place concurrently with preservation of archaeological findings from ancient Serdica.

"The first stage of construction will be finished by July, while by August 25, when Jose Manuel Barroso is expected in Bulgaria, the archaeological treasures will be ready for display," said the Bulgarian Minister of Culture.

The whole project is expected to be finished by the end of 2013, but the new underground line will be ready to be launched by the fall of 2012.

"BGN 300 M from the EU Regional Development Programme have been invested in preserving cultural and historic heritage on the metro line," added Minister Pavlova.

She explained that the Bulgarian capital is under way of developing a unique museum complex set to span the excavated Serdica sites, as well as a new Bulgarian art museum set to be constructed behind the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
