Teachers in Berlin are at the end of their tether, according to a German daily.
Since Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the EU, more and more Roma have flocked to Germany, many of whom send their children to school without any knowledge of the language, the Berliner Umschau states.
The teachers at the Hermann Schulz primary school in Berlin-Reinickendorf have sent a letter to the authorities to complain about the matter.
In one of the classes at the school, 20% of the children are Roma with no knowledge of German.
The teachers have complained that they are no longer capable of catering to the needs of the entire classes and are finding it impossible to teach the curriculum.
The situation is similar in other schools in the area.
The Reineke Fuchs primary school in Berlin-Reinickendorf has reported difficulties with handling 41 Roma children because there are no special-education teachers.
According to the publication, around 600 children of Bulgarian or Romanian origin go to school in Berlin's Neuk?lln borough.
In a bid to solve the problem, the local education authorities set up last year a total of 101 temporary learning groups for children without any knowledge of German.
Schools in Neuk?lln also offered summer school and temporary preparatory classes to remedy the language barrier problem.
The number of children who took advantage of the educational opportunities has not been accounted for.
Meanwhile, 11 teachers with knowledge of Romanian were appointed by way of an ad hoc permission, despite the fact that their degree is not normally recognized in Berlin.
