Bulgaria: 37 000 to Vote for Bulgarian President from Abroad, Mainly Turkey

A total of 37 606 applications have been filed by Bulgarian citizens living abroad declaring they are willing to vote in the upcoming presidential elections in the country.

The applications have arrived from 57 different countries, the Bulgarian Central Electoral Committee has announced. Expectedly, the vast majority are from the neighboring Turkey – 23 601. A total of 2799 are the potential voters living in Spain, while 2434 application have been filed from the US.

Bulgarian citizens living abroad had the right to declare that they want to vote not later than September 27.

The written requests were automatically sent through the internet site to the respective Bulgarian diplomatic mission.

Embassies and Consular Offices are mandated to open a poll section if they receive 100 applications for the same location.

This is the initiative's third edition. It is not affiliated with any political party and it is supported by the Public Councils of Bulgarians Abroad and the Facebook group Voting without Borders.
