A Caribbean Airlines plane with 140 people on board has crashed and split into two while landing in Guyana.
No fatalities have been reported so far, following NBC News' account of the matter.
According to Guyana's president, Bharrat Jagdeo, the plane narrowly missed falling into a 123-meter ravine.
The accident, which occurred early on Saturday amid rainy weather, caused the aircraft to break in two, resulting in several injuries but with no reported deaths.
The plane had left New York and made a stop in Trinidad before landing in Guyana.
Authorities are conducting a rescue operation despite the lack of adequate field lights and other emergency equipment.
The airport has been closed, with numerous flight cancellations leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
The crash of Flight BW523 is the worst in recent history in Guyana, and only one of the few serious incidents involving the Trinidad-based airline.
It is the single largest carrier in the region, operating at least five daily flights.
