On Monday, April 11, Eastern Japan saw a 7.1-magnitude aftershock of the devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted the region a month earlier, on March 11. Another strong aftershock, 7.4, was registered Friday.
More than 13 000 people have perished in the March 11 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami, and 14 000 are deemed missing. The powerful aftershocks have fortunately failed to cause further casualties or substantial damages.
