The presence of collaborators and agents of the former Communist State Security in Bulgaria's diplomatic missions around the world is not a problem for the country, Bulgarian President, Georgi Parvanov, declared.
Parvanov further accused the cabinet of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party in double standards because at least 10 diplomats from the secret services list have been appointed during its term.
The President pointed out the current "drama" was an attempt to divert attention from the failures of GERB.
Parvanov was in the northwestern city of Vratsa Friday to participate in the first from a series of meetings of his recently founded civic initiative ABV (Alternative for Bulgarian Renaissance – an acronym from the first three letters of the Bulgarian alphabet) to discuss and create programs for the development of different regions across the country.
On Tuesday, Bulgaria's special panel, investigating the communist-era police files, known as the Files' Commission, announced that nearly 190 Bulgarian Ambassadors and Consuls, or nearly 50% of all current Bulgarian diplomats, have been collaborators and agents of the former Communist State Security.
The probe involved 462 diplomats. The law mandates checks of Ambassadors, Consuls, and Deputy Directors of diplomatic missions.
