Landmark Trial Begins: Former US President Trump Faces Criminal Charges
The first criminal trial against a former US president commences in a New York courtroom
Bulgaria's notorious ethnic Turk, Ali Yuzeirov, is going to run for president in 2011, Yuzeirov, himself, stated Monday during a special press conference.
Even if the Muslim OTOMAN party, founded by brothers Ali and Yuzeir Yuzeirovi, is not registered legally, Ali would be nominated by an initiative committee of 21 members.
"The vice president slot is still available. Anyone from the minorities can run as long as he or she has Bulgarian citizenship," the ethnic Turk added.
Yuzeirov further threatened to take current President, Georgi Parvanov, to court after the end of the latter's term over statements OTOMAN is anti-Constitutional because it is an organization based on religion and ethnicity. He said, however, he would not sue Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, for the same words, and would just focus on Parvanov, but would not spare "the first media and the first journalist who attempt to turn OTOMAN into their own PR campaign."
The leadership of the still-unregistered party will include three people, but the names of the other two were not revealed along with the names of the fifty said founders.
Yuzeirov further explained the party is financed through his and his brother's businesses, and asked any of the party's followers to meet with him in person or call his office.
In the beginning of April, Yuzeirovi's attempt to found the Muslim party OTOMAN in the city of Shumen failed because the brothers were unable to gather the needed 500 supporters. Ali Yuzeirov complained at the time that many buses and followers on foot were on their way but could not arrive to the meeting because they were stopped by the police.
The abbreviation OTOMAN stands for "Union for Tolerance, Responsibility, Moral, and Alternative Progress." Yet the party's name bears uncanny connotation to the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria's bitter past under Turkish dominion.
Yuzeirovi insist that OTOMAN's main goal is to promote religious and ethnic tolerance. Their similar initiatives in the summer and fall of 2009 have been slammed by many commentators as attempts to stir ethnic and religious tension.
In the fall of 2009, the two brothers erected a monument of the Unknown Turkish/Muslim Soldier near Targovishte, which was torn down by the authorities after court action.
