Volcano Eruption Triggers Urgent Evacuations of Thousands in Indonesia
Indonesia is grappling with a mounting crisis as rescue teams mobilize to evacuate thousands of people following a series of volcanic eruptions that have rattled the region
Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted again Friday, spewing huge clouds of gas and ash intro the air, BBC reported.
Two days after its initial eruption and hours after some of its victims were buried in a mass grave, the volcano, located on the Java Island, exploded again.
At least 32 people have been killed so far. According to official information, most of them had died from burns or suffocation.
On Monday, officials raised a third-degree alert and warned villagers in a radius of 10 km to move to safer ground. However, some people stayed behind to look after crops and livestock.
A government expert has announced that the high alert will remain.
"The threat is still there, which is why the status [will] still stay at red," Surono said, as cited by the BBC.
Rescue teams are continuing to search the ash-covered slopes of the volcano for more victims.
Merapi is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia and has produced more lava flows than any other volcano in the world. It has been active for 10,000 years and has registered eruptions on average every four years, RIA Novosti has reported.
