Bulgaria hopes to be a member of the Schengen Agreement by March 2011, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov announced.
Tsvetanov met Sunday with the other Deputy Prime Minister, Simeon Djankov, and the head of the National Revenue Agency Krasimir Stefanov in order to discuss the progress of the government measures for joining the Schengen Area.
“The goal that we have set is to join the Schengen Agreement in March 2011. We are working in cooperation with our Romanian colleagues – unlike the period of competition before our EU accession. I hope that we will sign the treaties for accession to the Schengen Agreement in the coming months. Our first step was the one-stop border control on the border with Greece,” Tsvetanov explained.
The Interior Minister has also commented that the very fact that there is debate within Bulgaria’s Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) means that there is progress with respect to the judicial reform.
He said the special operation of the police codenamed “Magistrates” is continuing, and that it actually started in April with the arrest of judge Petar Santirov, who was caught helping ex Defense Minister Nikolay Tsonev attempt to bribe an investigator.
