The Bulgarian Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, has confirmed that Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NAP) officials will travel to Germany this week to investigate Bulgarians who have not paid tax on money in their Swiss bank accounts.

Djankov said that the center-right GERB government will charge the full tax on the large sums that are discovered. He added that the Bulgarian government has already started working with the German government on the issue but has not yet gone directly to the banks.

“This is not going to cost us anything, Borisov (Bulgaria PM) has a good personal relationship with Merkel (German chancellor)... on this friendly basis we will take the information for free.”

Meanwhile, Djankov stated there will be major developments this week in the ‘Owls’ operation which is inspecting illegal production and trade of cigarettes and alcohol, as well as gambling activities.

Djankov, speaking in an interview on PRO.BG, said that the special ‘Owls’ operation has already been going on for 2 months and is expected to last another 1-2 months. He added that the ‘Owls’ operation had also helped the high profile special police operations ‘Octopus’ and ‘Impudent’.

Djankov continued that the first part of the ‘Owls’ operation had targeted Excise – with the last 2 strikes against breweries in Varna and Lesovo. The second part of the operation is targeting people who have a declared income of over BGN 50 000 but have not registered for V.A.T, he added.
