The European Commission (EC) could initiate penal proceedings against Greece over the blockade at the border with Bulgaria.
The warning was issued Tuesday by Jonathan Todd, EC Spokesperson in charge of Competition.
The Greek cabinet had violated the EU legislation over its failure to warn Bulgaria and the EC about the blockade and by continuing to not answer the urgent questioning by the EC, Tod says, adding Greece is required to provide alternative routes for the transport of goods across the border, which had not been done either.
“The EC could begin penal proceedings, but we will make the decision only after all facts become available,” Tod is quoted as saying by the Bulgarian daily “Dnevnik.”
If the EC initiates administrative sanctions, Greece would face steep fines, but the process can take years, “Dnevnik” further notes.
Meanwhile representatives of several Bulgarian ministries are in Brussels for a meeting at the EC to discuss the issue.
