Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou agreed to the meeting of Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov with protesting farmers at the Greek border earlier Friday, which led to the re-opening of one border crossing.

The Council of Ministers press department reported that Borisov met with senior representatives of the strike committee and the Greek farmers' unions at the Kulata-Promahon border crossing for 15 minutes on Friday afternoon.

"I am here at the agreement of your Prime Minister, and this meeting is in no case directed against the policy of the Greek government. I am here because of inhumane conditions that put people on the other side of the border because of the losses suffered by our country every day from this blockade. I suggest you stop the strike, because it has begun to create animosity towards you in Bulgaria " Borisov told the protesters on the Greek side of the border.

The tractor blockade at the Bulgarian-Greek border of Kulata-Promahon was lifted at 18:00 Friday evening after Borisov’s meeting.

Borisov accepted a letter from the farmers' union outlining their concerns and promised them he would brief the European Union so that their demands for higher subsidies would be met, according to DPA agency.

Greek farmers had previously refused to end the blockade until they secure subsidies, guaranteed prices, reduction of their production expenditure and unfreezing of their bank loans.

Following the meeting, it became clear that the protesters had agreed that they would unblock the whole Bulgarian-Greek border, but no timeline for this was given.

Earlier this week, the Bulgarian government had appealed to the European Union, urging them to take immediate action to end the blockade.
