Rumiana Jeleva will not withdraw from her post of Bulgaria's foreign minister after her resignation was not accepted by the prime minister, the department announced.
“Prime Minister Boyko Borisov accepted today the resignation of Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Rumiana Jeleva as European Commissioner designate. Jeleva will continue to serve as the country's foreign minister,” the official press release of the foreign ministry announced.
An earlier statement of the press office of the department said that the prime minister has accepted Jeleva's resignation as foreign minister. The gaffe drew the anger of Borisov, who said that the one who made the blunder will be fired.
Having failed to convince the European Parliament about her suitability for the job, Bulgaria's controversial candidate for the post of European Commissioner Rumiana Jeleva dropped her bid Tuesday.
Members of the Parliament had accused Jeleva of incompetence and lying on her declaration of interests. The move could delay confirmation of the new 27-strong team, as members of the European Parliament carry out confirmation on all Commission candidates.
Bulgarian government has nominated Kristalina Georgieva, Vice-President of the World Bank, as the new candidate for the post, EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso said.
The European Commission said in a statement that Barroso "welcomed the swift reaction of the Bulgarian Government," and added that the process of putting together his new 26-member policy commission "should now continue and be concluded at the earliest opportunity."
