The Development Committee of the EP has put off its taking a decision on the Bulgarian EU Commissioner-Designate Rumiana Jeleva for one or two days.
This has been reported by the Bulgarian National Radio citing Brussels sources. After Jeleva’s hearing on Tuesday, which is widely regarded as “unconvincing”, the political coordinators of the Development Committee decided later Tuesday night to put off their final decision on whether to back Jeleva’s confirmation by 24 hours.
The idea behind this postponement was to let the EU financial and legal services examine the information that in 2007-2009 Jeleva was simultaneously a MEP and a manager and owner of the private firm Global Consult, thus being involved in conflict of interets. In addition, the MEPs stated they were expecting the position of EC President Jose Manuel Barroso on the issues surrounding Jeleva.
According to the BNR, however, the Development Committee of the EP still had not submitted any request to EC President Barroso for him position on Jeleva’s case. According to the cited Brussels sources, the coordinators of the political parties in the Committee have decided to give one or two more days to the EU financial and legal services to inspect the financial status of the Bulgarian Foreign Minister Jeleva.
Reports from certain European media make it clear that the final decision for or against Jeleva will be made next week when the Parliament is going to vote on the proposed new European Commission.
