A number of people have been arrested for vote-buying across Bulgaria after a special operation by the Bulgarian police, prosecutors and the national security agency (DANS).

Roman Vasilev, the Sofia Deputy Prosecutor, announced the arrests, saying that an organized vote-buying group had been busted, which had concentrated on the county's European elections.

He said that the group had been completely broken up by the bust and that it will make a large difference to the number of votes that will be bought in the days leading up to the Bulgarian general elections.

Vasilev added that the operation will continue up until the general elections on Sunday. He stated that DANS had received a large number of information from the general public since the start of 2009 which had helped with the operation.
