Bulgaria's National Road Infrastructure Agency froze Tuesday the tenders for the construction of Lot 2 and Lot 3 of the Trakiya Highway at the insistence of the European Commission.
The Agency has received a letter from the Internal Market and Services Directorate-General of the Commission which indicated possible violations in the conducting of the public procurement procedures for the continued construction of the highway.
In order to prevent any abuses of public funds, the EC has insisted that the Road Infrastructure Agency should not sign any new contracts or take any other actions regarding the completion of Trakiya Highway until it provided answers to the questions posed by the Commission.
The tenders for the construction of Lot 2 (between the city of Stara Zagora and the town of Nova Zagora) and Lot 3 (between the town of Nova Zagora and the city of Yambol) were announced in August and September respectively.
Eight companies are bidding for the construction of the each of the two lots including three Bulgarian consortiums, two Austrian firms, one Greek, one Turkish, and one Croatian companies.
