The US federal authorities have issued a warning to the New York City police about a possible terror plot against the city's subway and train systems during the holiday season, prompting local officials to increase security at all stations, the Bulgarian information agency BGNES reported citing leading world agencies.
The information further says the FBI has received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that in late September al-Qaida terrorists may have discussed attacking the subway system in a manner similar to the 2004 attacks in Madrid.
According to the reports, FBI has recently received credible information about possible attacks over the holiday season, and authorities were particularly concerned about the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The task of the police force in the Big Apple would be especially difficult due to the tightly packed passenger trains and subway cars with people with heavy coats, carrying large packages.
For this reason, unlike previous advisory warnings, the language of the current warning is, reportedly, especially blunt.
The New York city subway has a total of 486 stops and is used by over 5 million people each day.
